Greece rescuing tons of of migrants in sturdy winds off Crete


ATHENS: Greece’s coastguard on Tuesday was rescuing a fishing boat with as much as 500 migrants onboard in sturdy winds southwest of Crete, a spokeswoman instructed AFP.
“The misery name stated there are 400-500 folks on board,” a coastguard spokeswoman instructed AFP, including that the operation was hampered by close to gale-force winds.
“They will see the boat, it is adrift, there’s a lot of folks on board,” she added.
The coastguard stated it had obtained the misery name shortly after midnight on Monday. Two close by cargo ships, a tanker and two Italian fishing boats have been lending help, it stated.
Due to bolstered patrols by the Greek coastguard and EU border company Frontex within the Aegean Sea, migrant smugglers are more and more using the longer and extra perilous route south of Crete, Greek officers say.
“Eighty % of flows from Turkey go straight to Italy,” Migration Minister Notis Mitarachi instructed Skai TV final week.
